First of all you have to get indexed in the search engines ( i mean google). Now dont go submitting your site with their submit url page. You ask why, because you'll get indexed only after few month and when you do you get indexed you'll have Pagerank0 - 1. With pagerank like this you probably wount be able to hit the top of the search results even in non compatitive topic.
What you need to instead is to try and get other site to link to your site with the keyword in the link itself and in return you link to their. You do that by finding sites that may be interested in linking with you and than mail them asking to exchange links. After the mailing is done you need to wait few days, weeks, but you will get indexed faster this way, because google will find your site from site that link to you and when you get inexed you also will have higher Pagerank and rank better in the seach results.

while you wait for the links and to get indexed you need to be shure that when google comes to index your site, you have optimized you site to use your keywords ( same keyword that in the links pointing to your site ) in all the important elements of the site
Optimization
The basics is to use your keywords in the title , meta tags, on a body and on top of the body(if posible the first word or phrase of the page) middle and botom. Very important to have as many as posible links to your site using your keywords (if your keyword is "dog" than you need to links to your site when the keyword is a clickable part of the link like this "dog = <a href="www.yoursite.com">dog</a>".
The more link you have pointing your site with the keyword, the better ranking you'll get for that keyword.
in any element of the site that uses the keyword (url, title,meta tags, headings text, links and alt text), try to put the keyword in the beginning of the element and remember that if you want to rang well on search results you have to use rich content for your site.
