You can always use free hosting and some subdomain, but search engines doesn't like that a lot. I dont say that it will be impossible to get your site to the top of search results if you use free hosting, but in keywords with high competition level you'll have to work harder than if you had your own domain.

 

Free hosting: you can search the net for free hosting and you'll get tons of sites that you can work with, some will put ads in return and some won't, of course the recommended one is the yahoo's geocyties.com. They are easy to setup end maintain, but they use ads on your site, anyway within 5 min you find the one that fits your needs.

Here is another one awardspace.com. You get 200mb space, support: CGI, PHP, SSI, FrontPage Extensions, Perl and ftp access and this is a big plus.

There are some companies offering free hosting if you register domain thru them or transfer your domain to them. What you get is site with domain name and not sub domain, its look more professional and reliable from visitor point of view and the crawlers. Here are a few i know and recommend:

Search for free templets and look for html templets .after you have found and downloaded your templets you can add pages with ease and just changing the text of the main body of the page (the content that changes from page to page ), saving it as html page and set the links to your new files.

Free templets are great time saver but what you normally get from free templets is basic design and general, not optimized for any special theme design so if you need some templets that will match your site theme i suggest you check the premier template. this is still quite cheap if you compare to the costs of hiring a designer.
